Oopsie, a little bit behind.
Week 3 was a success. I've discovered that I should not run on Tuesday nights. It's my lowest energy day of the week and Tuesday runs always leave me feeling like I'm attempting the impossible.
Week 4 was pretty good. The first run sucked (again, on a Tuesday), but my Friday run was great and then my first outdoor run was a success on Sunday...I did week 1 of C25K but on the asphalt and went 2 miles in about 38 minutes. I was definitely happy with that.
Last night, I did it a little differently and decided to run a mile. Or at least as much of a mile as I could. I ran the mile in 21:15 according to my wildly inaccurate treadmill, but I did 16:15 of that running. Including one 9 minute stretch. Endorphins kicked in on one run and I realized that "runners high" is not just a trick they play on people to try to convince them running is fun.
Tomorrow I am doing a mile outside. Then Sunday I'm doing 1.3 miles inside. Then Tuesday I can get back to the gym and use the good treadmills and the bike path. It'll be on my lunch, so the energy thing shouldn't be an issue. I think if I increase my mileage by .3 or so each pair of runs (1 indoor, 1 outdoor, taking walk breaks as needed). I should be ready to rock and roll by September 15th.
Is it weird that I'm looking ahead to my 2nd 5K when I haven't even done my first one? But the student governement at the kids' school is going to put on a 5K in October to help raise money for a new playground, which the school desperately needs. My kids are starting 2nd grade and Kindergarten, so they are going to be there for awhile. There is also normally a 5K in late October that raises money for my old school's athletic programs. Then there is another in the Spring for the PT school where I work that raises money for a scholarship fund. Good thing I bought those running shoes!

Week 2 (over)Done
The good news is that I finished week 2 strong. I did a full 3.1 miles on the treadmill on Saturday and finished in 57:15. My goal is under an hour, so that was fine. I know I can walk faster on the ground than I can on the treadmill because I'm just a bit scared of falling on the treadmill. I even did some 4 mph runs, which is definitely as fast as I have ever gone.
The bad news is that my right shin is now a mess. It hurts. Thank goodness I work in a Physical Therapy school and can get some advice.
I am supposed to run tomorrow, but I may bike instead. Still working, just a little less load-bearing. I'm going to sit down and do a good stretch tonight--icing and stretching helped me last night quite a bit. I need to remember to stretch my calves and shins before I get on the treadmill. Those days hurt less.

Week 2, Day 1
My shins! My Shins! My shins are on fire...
I have discovered that I am, at least for now, just meant to be a slow runner. Anytime I tried to go above 3 mph on my treadmill (I'm not sure the speedometer is accurate, I really do think I was going faster than that), my shins would burn. As soon as I scaled back, I was fine.
So I may not be setting any land-speed records in my 5K. But finishing is better than not and running slow is better than sitting on my butt.
On that note, I am reading a good book called No Need for Speed. It's all about becoming a runner and not worrying about times and coming in first. Finishing the race is better than not racing at all.
And isn't that what it's all about? The journey. It's about getting fit and healthy, even if it takes me all damn day. lol

Week 1 DONE!
Yay me!
Finished off the first week of training with my last week one run/walk.
I downloaded the podcasts from http://runningintoshape.com/ and it was fun. The time went faster because I wasn't busy staring at the clock, trying to do the math on whether or not it is time for me to run or not. I finished up with a 2:30 minute run, just to see if I could.
Shins were yelling at me a little on run #2, but I slowed down a little and they were fine. I'm trying not to focus on time or distance just yet. I need to learn how to run first. I am glad that I work for a Physical Therapy school, though, just in case. I have access to some great PTs if I need them.
David was going to the store last night and I had him grab me a bag of M&Ms just out of habit. I ate them, but they totally weren't worth it. And anyone who knows how much I love M&Ms knows how odd it is for me to say that.
I'm planning to do some yoga tonight and maybe a walk with the doggies tonight and/or tomorrow. Who is this chick? I didn't do anything yesterday because I got distracted by yarn-related projects.
Finishing up week 1 with a passage from the Book of Bieber:

2nd Run Done!
Got my second training run in last night. Was AWESOME.
I spent some time reading up on how to avoid shin splints (a problem since my High school cheerleading days) and about good form. I ran slowly (very slowly) and focused on landing on the right part of the foot and I felt pretty good. My legs feel really good today...I can tell I worked out, but I'm not sore.
A yoga day today, plus we got Kyle's room cleaned up and I think we might take the dogs for a walk later on today. I'm amazed already at how much better I feel and how much better I have slept the last couple of nights. I don't know why I'm amazed, I always feel better when I work out and eat right, but I get sidetracked now and then.
My first official weigh-in will be Monday, but the scale this morning has me down 1 1/2 pounds this week. I have 30 that I want/need to get off, so I'll take that.
I'm wishing I had a smartphone and a state-of-the-art treadmill, but I'm managing just fine. David is going to run the 5K with me, although I've already told him he doesn't have to stick with me.
Here's another scary thing, I'm already thinking about the "next' 5K. lol There is another one locally in October. I don't think I'll ever be a marathoner, but I can see some 5Ks in my future if everything keeps going like it is now.

I want to run
No seriously. I'm sitting at work with about 3 hours to go and I keep thinking about getting down there and hopping on the treadmill. And I'm looking forward to it.
So weird. I think I have been possessed by the spirit of someone who likes to run. I've never been a runner. Aerobics, yes. I have a LARGE collection of workout videos. The elliptical is pretty cool too. But not running. Unless there is a machete-wielding zombie after me, and even then it would be 50/50 if I would really run or if I would just make a show of it and then get eaten.
I am going to have to borrow Kyle's headphones. Mine are busted and I can not run without music. I need to make some playlists so I don't have to spend time and risk injury changing songs a lot.
Did some yoga and stretching last night. I was really amazed I wasn't more sore yesterday after my first run/walk. Hopefully that means I'm not in as bad of shape as I thought. I know I could walk the 3 miles today. Not very quickly, but I could do it.
57 days to go!

The journey of a thousand miles...
starts with a single step, or so they say.
My journey of 3.1 miles began in my basement with a lot of swearing.
I'm doing my first 5K in September. I began training yesterday. Couch to 5K swears I can be ready. I know I can be ready if I put my stubborn mind to it.
The treadmill in our basement is finicky, so I think I went too fast the first couple of run segments, resulting in a lot of shin pain and the previously mentioned swearing. Once I got that under control, I was good. The last couple of weeks I will have a chance to get back to Wellworks and if the temperature ever drops below 90, I'll do some test runs outside as well.
Right now I just want to run more than 1 minute without feeling like I am going to die.
I can do this. I have to do this. I can't stay this heavy, unless I want to join the diabetics in my family. I owe it to my kids to hang around and be healthy. I owe it to myself.
Now if I could just figure out how to knit and run at the same time... lol
